I mentioned in my last post that I was doing the Silhouette Challenge with some REALLY AWESOME and CREATIVE bloggers, I'm super EXCITED to see what everyone has created and everything that will be created when you let your creative juices flow!
I'm at a point in my life that I always knew would come. It seems like everyone I know is pregnant or just had a baby! I have about 6 friends that I needed baby gifts for, and I thought what a fantastic reason for me to play with the Silhouette Smooth Heat Transfer vinyl! I didn't want to mess anything really expensive up with it, and I wanted something small that I could start with and learn from. So, lets do a walkthrough of how everything went down and what I messed up, so that you don't have to make the same mistakes!
**I wish I had more pictures to share, but the only ones I can get to right now are on Facebook. My area was part of the Mississippi tornadoes that hit yesterday and I was out of town and planned on finishing and putting all my pictures in. However, Mother Nature had other plans and so I just have a few - future posts will have more step by step...**
I have seen some really cute baby clothes on Etsy, and gathered my inspiration from there and Pinterest. I think that the tie onesies for the boys are so freaking cute that I want to make them in every color! Unfortunately, I had black and teal that came with my machine so they would have to make do.
I created the designs in Silhouette Studio and worked with them a little to make sure they were the right size (I'm not a very good "measurer" because I just don't like it, so for things like this I just kind of guess at it) and went by the squares on my mat to make sure that I would have a newborn sized baby tie and not an elephant one. Then, I cut the transfer material with the wrong side up (matte side=no go). After that I forgot to move the bar and put it back down so I didn't get a good cut.
Place the material in the Silhouette SHINY SIDE UP, put all your levers in place and double check (maybe that's just me that has to double check). Cut out the design and peel off the excess (you can flip it to the matte side now). Alright. Now I had my images on clear transfer tape. Now comes the hard part - the IRONING!
The instructions say to put it on a Cotton setting, place a piece of fabric between it and press for 45-60 seconds. Then, you are supposed to remove the iron & fabric and check to see if its "transferred", well the fabric they mean is something THIN (not a dishtowel) and by press they mean set it down on the fabric covered design, go do something else for about 5 minutes and come back. The first baby onesie I did was with the dishtowel and I just ended up removing my "fabric" and ironing directly onto the heat transfer clear tape stuff (I'm pretty sure that's frowned upon by the instruction writers at Silhouette) but I didn't leave it and just checked it every minute or so...on the second one I tried some just regular weight fabric and turned the iron up a little higher. They took around 5-6 rounds of the 60-90 second checking before I was getting progress with sticking I thought. Once the transfer is on there, I took it and removed the clear tape, put my fabric back over the design and ironed for about another minute or so.

I was more than thrilled with the way they turned out! They are so cute and easy (once you get the hang of things...remember I'm a newbie)
Now for the fun part, go and see what all the amazing women that are in The Silhouette Challenge whipped up this month! If you want in on the fun too, email Lauren at The Thinking Closet and let her know. We would love to have you!

And, this is where I did my VERY FIRST link-ups to party!
As I've already told you, I absolutely LOVE how these onesies turned out. Thanks for all the tips on ironing; I'll definitely refer to this post when tackling heat transfer vinyl for the first time (possibly for next month's challenge). Sending up prayers for you and your town as you begin the recovery process.
ReplyDeleteThese are really, really adorable onesies!! I'll be praying for your town and the recovery ahead as well.
ReplyDeleteThank y'all so much! I'm so excited to play with my freezer paper and fabrics when I get home! I made a table ironing board from something I saw on Pinterest, too. We steam our clothes and I don't like having to run all over the house with my crafts! I'll post a tutorial for that when I get home & take pictures.
ReplyDeleteHelp! I cant get the download to open! I am so in love with these!!!!
DeleteI love those more and more every time I see them! Best wishes on the recovery process.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed getting to know you too. :) And I LOVE how these turned out. I have never used HTV before and had always wondered how it ironed on. I have a friend pregnant with a baby girl and was stuck on what type of onesie to make her - think I'm gonna use your idea. ;)
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm a new follower! Found you at the Monday meet-up! I totally feel for you, I only have 2 friends who are pregnant but my world seems so suddenly full of them! I'm so excited and I'm looking forward to buying them baby gifts as well!
ReplyDeleteFollow back? :)

ReplyDeletep.s. hope your home and loved ones are ok. Your community is in my prayers.
DeleteJessica - thanks for hosting! Thankfully no one was hurt in the tornado (only 10 in history where no one was hurt with one that big!) I was at the hospital all day yesterday for my neighbor having her baby, and I'm working on that onesie right now haha! I love my SIlhouette machine (I call her Gertie)
ReplyDeleteI'll look forward to linking up and I'll follow back on GFC
Love how they turned out! Thanks for sharing at Monday Funday this week!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Trish
Those are so cute!! I love the necklace one you did for the girl! Too sweet!! Thanks for inviting me over!

I started looking online for tips about the heat transfer as it wasn't working for me either in the 45-60 seconds. It probably took 10 min of constantly taking it off assuming it had to be ready. I'm sticking with the 5 minutes straight next time! Thanks for confirming my sanity :)
ReplyDeleteIs there anyway to get the pearl necklace download again? My best friend is having her first baby girl very soon and I wanted to make her a onesie!
ReplyDeleteI'm unable to download these files. Would love to make as gifts! any help is appreciated!
ReplyDeletehello, i love love love your blog?
ReplyDeleteIm a little confused by your instructions...
my question is why do you not use a mat when you cut the vinyl and also why dont you mirror the image before you cut it? the only constant thing i have read so far on each blog is that the image should be cut in reverse (the debate is still out on if a mat is needed or not)
All my friends have babies so i am so excited to start doing these tutorials
PS i had no problem downloading the files for the necklace and the tie I can repost them for you if you want
